Zwift Alternatives 2026: Rouvy, MyWhoosh and more

· 7 minutes read

You ride indoors with a smart trainer and are looking for an alternative to Zwift? Then it matters less which app is “the best” than what you actually want: company, training by plan, real roads, or simply fun while the watts still have to be right. Here are the main names, short and without marketing talk.

In short
  • Many riders, races, community: Zwift (or MyWhoosh if you want it free).
  • Real roads and video: Rouvy, Kinomap, FulGaz.
  • Training by plan, without a game world: TrainerRoad, Wahoo SYSTM.
  • Training with a thrill, short sessions, low price: Zombike.

What they all have in common

All the apps mentioned here talk to your smart trainer over Bluetooth or ANT+ and read watts, cadence and heart rate. Most trainers work with all of them. This is the FTMS standard (Fitness Machine Service). If your trainer supports it, you are not tied to one brand, and switching only costs you the sign-up.

The apps in detail

Zwift: the benchmark

Zwift shaped the virtual cycling world: many riders at once, group rides, races, workouts. If you want company and competition, it has the widest choice. You also pay the most, and the game world is not for everyone. If you only want to train, you will never use much of it.

Rouvy: real roads

Rouvy puts you on real, filmed routes with riders overlaid, plus events and workouts. The obvious choice if Zwift feels too artificial and you want to ride well-known passes. As a pure training tool, the route visuals are not what you pay for.

MyWhoosh: the Zwift feeling without a subscription

MyWhoosh offers a similar game world, currently free. If you want to try whether virtual riding suits you, you risk no money here. Watch how the offer develops before you rely on it long term.

TrainerRoad and Wahoo SYSTM: training first

Neither sells fun; both sell progress: plans that adapt to your level and knowledge about what the sessions do. They are the choice for riders working towards a goal. In return the sessions feel more like work. SYSTM (formerly “The Sufferfest”) adds videos and mental training.

Kinomap and FulGaz: video routes

Both show video footage of real routes. That is calmer than a game world and good for long, easy sessions with nice scenery. They are not made for hard intervals or motivation through game mechanics.

Zombike: training that looks like a game

Zombike takes a different path and does not try to copy Zwift. You ride through a city with zombies on your tail, and your watts decide whether you escape: ride too softly and they catch up, push too hard and you wake them. There are also interval workouts, a pizza delivery as a second story, a leaderboard and a garage for bike and rider. It runs directly in the browser, Chrome or Edge on a computer and Android, without installing anything. An app is coming for iPhone and iPad because Safari does not support Bluetooth.

What Zombike cannot do: there are (yet) no other riders in your world, no races and no real routes. The world is smaller than in Zwift. If you need that, the others are a better fit.

What it is good for: short, hard sessions where motivation is otherwise missing, and anyone who gets bored during 45 minutes of indoor training. 7 days are free, then €3.99 a month for the first 3 months (Halloween Special Price, then the regular €7.99) or €59 a year.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. What is missing right now? Company: Zwift or MyWhoosh. Nice routes: Rouvy, Kinomap, FulGaz. Progress: TrainerRoad or SYSTM. Thrills and fun: Zombike.
  2. Try for free. Almost all offer a trial (often 14 days), MyWhoosh is free anyway. Try two apps for a week each.
  3. Combine. Many riders use one app for plans and another for variety. Since your trainer works everywhere, switching only costs time.

Privacy: where is your data?

Training produces sensitive data: power, heart rate, training times, often linked to your email address and payment data. Especially with providers outside the EU it is worth reading the privacy policy before you sign up:

Many international providers are based in the USA or do not state a storage location. That is not automatically a problem, but you should know it. Zombike stores account and training data in the EU (Ireland) and asks only for what is necessary for the account and payment. The details are in the Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does my trainer work with the alternatives?

If it supports the Bluetooth standard FTMS, usually yes. Brands such as Tacx, Wahoo, Elite, Saris or the Zwift Hub count as FTMS-capable. Check the data sheet before you buy or switch.

Do I need a new device?

No, you only need a smart trainer and a device with Bluetooth. Zombike runs in the browser, Chrome or Edge on a computer and Android, without installing anything. An app is coming for iPhone and iPad because Safari does not support Bluetooth.

Is there a free Zwift alternative?

Yes, MyWhoosh is currently free. Most others offer a trial of a few days up to two weeks.

Note: All trademarks mentioned belong to their respective owners. Zombike has no connection to them. Details on prices and features are guide values as of October 2026 and may change.
